NO MORE HIM by Elizabeth Muriithi

She stealthily walks down the Academic Highway, her thoughts scantily scattered over all her activities and escapades of the previous semester. As she blankly stares at her increasingly protruding belly, she envisages her burden becoming bigger, heavier and overwhelming.

How she wishes she could turn back the hands of time right back to the moment she first met him, right back to the time he first held her hand and kissed her so passionately, right back to the moment her stupid mind and her fragile heart believed his lies that he truly loved her and he was different from all the others. Yes, if she could only rewind the hour glass, then she couldn’t be standing distraught as she was right now.

As corny as it may sound, Denver was the TDH (Tall, Dark and Handsome) guy who had sworn to catch a grenade for her just to win her love. Little did she know that he was actually the one who was going to throw the grenade at her! As his mask gradually started coming off, he turned out to be a good for nothing pig, a drawback in her life and an interloper masquerading as her Prince Charming. Basically, a heinous wolf in sheep’s clothing and there was nothing she could do about it now but to just leave it to karma; fate always has a way of giving people their rightful dues.

A pretty meticulous engineer he appeared to be; always soothing her whenever her moods changed abruptly and constantly putting up with all the drama and crap that came with it. He even went the extra mile and bought her favourite vanilla-flavoured ice-cream during such times. It was all working like it did in the movies; frequent dates, night strolls between their two hostels and not to forget the long late night calls when they stayed up late chatting all night about nothing in particular. What more could she have asked for? Denver was head-over-heels for her; she had him tied round her little finger. Or so she figured.

Being in her second year of study, everything seemed to be falling into place, or was it? She now had a man she could call her own and she always talked about him to all and sundry who cared to listen. In her mind, she had now graduated to become the ideal campus girl. She always had it being said that she would graduate with more degrees in addition to the one that JAB (Joint Admissions Board) had admitted her to pursue; a husband, a baby and another degree at hustling. Her first degree, Denver seemed to be going well enough but she gave little thought to the second degree. He would certainly marry her if that came along, or would he?

She still vividly remembers that rainy morning in his room when she dropped the bombshell; she was with child. His reaction to that is what mesmerized her most till this day.

“That ain’t mine. No way!!” he retorted.

With that, he had put her under the sod. How could she have been that naïve? How could she have let him murder her heart? What was everyone going to say about her? What of her JAB degree? What would become of it? What would become of her?

Damn! Denver had tossed all her feelings for him in the trash but she was not about to let him have the last laugh. She’s not going to have any more of him in her life. No way!! She has resolved to keep her baby despite the ridicules being hurled her way by “friends” and the hardships she was going to face raising her angel. She still hopes to find true love, thus if it still exists and has a feeling that Denver will one day (very soon) come crawling for forgiveness. She just can’t wait
