Future vs Past By Waithira Gichiri

John was a young man intelligent and had a lot laying ahead of him. Life seemed prospective till he made a decision to buy land at a remote but potential area. The seller told him well of the place and showed him his potential asset, of which he was pleased by and went on to pay the down payments and the subsequent installment till it was all his.

The problem with John was that he never verified and approved of the land’s ownership, though having spent a huge fortune on it. One day living in the urban area he visited the land he owned to see how the piece of land can be of a financial gain to him. Enthusiastic of his plans he retained a delighted smile on his face, just to drop it when he found his possession under construction.

After a prolonged roe with the constructors the acclaimed owner arrived to defend what he knew was his with relevant documents of ownership that John lacked. This marked the start of John’s base of excuses which made him to become the ordinary man that he never thought he would be.

A simple definition of the word past is that which has passed we all know and well aware of what happened in our pasts. Time has taught us well that we have no control over it but we can manage it, we can not change what has happened a second, minute, hour, month or year ago but we can use the lessons and experiences over time to make our present and future life better.

At this particular time our mind might be here yesterday or tomorrow. That is no problem, the problem comes in when we decide to make the state of our mind being in the past a permanent one. It is good to refer and remind ourselves and infer from our past events and actions that help us to decide on what action, caution or judgment to make next.

From John’s position we get two case scenarios: falling and rising up or falling and remaining on the ground. For John he decided to take the latter, always making excuses of not buying property just because the first attempt was a failure while if he pursued the first one he could have learnt from mistakes, dust himself off and tried again this time taking caution and acting from a more informed and wiser state.

Many are the times in life we are faced with lucrative and convincing ideas and states. We take them up and some go well, others just don’t. But what we fail to understand is in our undertakings is that we are not perfect and we are bound to make mistakes and when we do; this should not be the end but the start of our journey towards our intended mission.

It’s just like a child learning how to walk, their first step may either be firm or weak causing them to fall to the ground, but does it mean that since the child fell he will never learn to walk? The child is pushed by his mentors such that if he was weak he becomes strong and is able to master the art of walking.

Just as the child we should never stop striving what we have set out to accomplish. The road may be tough, rough and hard but we should remember to raise our heads and focus straight ahead to our final destination course. Lets face it you can be what you want to only if you want to, your dream should not be limited to the environment which you live in but to your highest goals and ambitions.

And remember in this life you either earn or learn and as much as you have failed or succeeded in the past, don’t get stuck there saying “I did”, but it went wrong, now I sit and just watch or “I succeeded” now I just reminisce, if you tripped raise up and change your gear and if you succeeded go a notch higher to realize your full potential, cause there are no limits to where you can reach
