The writing on the wall

By Lau Lawi

I may not be Daniel of the bible. Neither am I a prophet, But I saw the writing on the wall. Some people have specialized in this art. It is an art but it is not offered in the school of arts and social sciences. It is an art that is never recognized. Am talking about graffiti .

Every where you go in this paradise of higher learning (I wonder how high) you will come across it. But the specialists in this art are in the school of Human Resource Dev. I think that’s why they introduced a bachelors course in Graphics and Communication. I also wonder whether graffiti is also part of graphics. What is most amazing is the information or message in those writings. Check these ones out.

“Vumilia tu itatoka” in a toilet in Hostel G.Then someone had added a table of likes and ‘lolests’.

“The future of Kenya is on your hands” on the urinal in Hostel H third floor.

“F*#k, f*#k and f*#K ,you will contact AIDS” On a toilet in Hostel C bunker toilets.

“mbona unajificha kama kile unafanya si mbaya? A question posed in a toilet in Hostel B.

But the most captivating of all is a ‘ visitors book page’ on the door in one toilet on second floor of Hostel D .It has a ‘name’ column, ’reason of visit’ column, ’time in column’ and ‘time out’ column with a ‘comments’ column on the extreme end. This one really got me thinking. thinking is not my favourite hobby, how do you expect me to fill a ‘visitors book ‘ in a toilet of all places. But at least the guy who designed it knew the importance of record keeping. He must have been from school of Information Sciences.

To be cont’d.
