Haga, Saga and Swagger

by JOE OMAITA

You’ve probably come across a Moi University page bearing such a title. But have you taken time to break it down? What does ‘haga’ mean? For practical purposes, I’ll talk about our contextual meaning – and that has a lot to do with the ratings – remember the scales men use to weigh the qualities of a woman in my last article? I’m talking about haga, saga and swagger.

The thought of being ‘weighed’ in several abstract scales may really be scary. Picture two guys conversing and one asking the other “Has she got the real haga? What about her swag? Saga zake je? It’s unfortunate that it had to be this way, ladies, but I’ll try and break it down for you.

Haga has a lot and everything to do with the physical appearance – not just the haga, but the face, the ‘dashboard’, the hair – the whole caboodle. Your appeal. What have you got to swing?

I’ve been a big fan of Extreme Makeover where some women undergo complete transformations to try and keep up with the rest. Some want to look younger, others more appealing and the all appear ready to part with an arm to add to the haga part of it. Part of survival tactics I must say!

Next, we talk about swag. You already feel what it’s all about. What’s your swag? How do you carry yourself? Your polishing, finesse, sophistication. . . you know what I’m saying? Swag is dependent on two things: where you’ve spent most of your life, combined with your personality. This effectively forms your character. Of course, a lady from Mumias or from Murang’a may not ooze as much swag as one from Nakuru (I’m just saying!). It can even be the vice versa on rare occasions.

Like I said last time, confidence is a big turn-on for men. Coming from such counties as Mashinani may not impact negatively as much if you have the confidence to back you up. The good thing is that you may still want to associate with the boys from your hood who’ve got the same type of swag that you do. The point is, everyone’s got swag and it varies. Your understanding of swag defines your taste.

Saga looks like it is mostly to do with your personality. There’s not much you can do to change this. Some are nice by nature, others simplistic, while others are shy. Outgoing, bold, open-minded, plain dumb, self-centred, modest; these are some of the words you may use to describe yourself. It also includes your escapades that have come to the limelight. How much does the guy next door know about you, that he shouldn’t know?

Now, on a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your haga element (going by my definition!)? How about your swag on the same scale? And lastly, what is your sincere rating for saga zako? Good. Do the average now and see where you lie.
